  • This was a rather disappointing effort. The page is entitled "The War in Iraq News Page" yet shows four Iraqis under "Instrumental Figures: Four Men Affecting the People of Iraq" . Certainly Bush and Rumsfeld, at a minimum, should be included. In fact, Rumsfeld goes all the way back into the early 1980's as part of the history of US support and involvement over four decades of the career of Sadaam Hussein. Overall, the presentation is lacking in historical context, which is exactly why we are doomed to continue repeating this and other interventionist mistakes around the world.

  • David,
    I appreciate your feedback.
    Allow me to retort.
The reasoning for including four Iraqi biographies is because most readers (hopefully) have a general knowledge of who President Bush and Secretary of Defense Rumsfled are. These two men are quoted in the news far more often. It was a priority for us to give information about these four -very important, I might add- Iraqi figures affecting policy there because their backgrounds are realtively unknown to most people.
In response to your comment on our "lacking historical context," the amount of information covering "just" the three years we've been in Iraq took an entire page along with providing other context, such as background on Shiites and Sunnis.
I hope you gained at least some knowledge from the page. If anything, I hope you appreciate that The Spokesman-Review has devoted a significant amount of time, effort and space to help readers, even informed ones such as yourself, better understand the subject.

  • *please excuse the misspelling of "relatively" in my 12:21 comment.

  • Perhaps you are right about people's general knowledge of Bush and Rumsfeld. But I am talking about more Iraq specific information about them. After all, without Bush and Rumsfeld, Iraq would most likely be a country without a war today, the cradle of civilization without massive U.S.-paid-for holes in its building, people, and patrimony. Clearly the U.S. establishment, of which well-established and well-connected newspapers like the Spokesman Review are clearly part, is ready to move past the history of U.S. involvement in creating and supporting Saddam Hussein to an interpretation of the post-war environment in which the focus is on the "noble" efforts of the U.S. occupiers to "give the gift" of democracy to people of "murderous" and "fratricidal" religious backgrounds. Certainly the Spokesman-Review and its editors put this sort of analysis and reality beyond the scope of their responsibility as information gatekeepers. They perhaps even consider it beyond the intellectual capability of their readership. But there are certainly many people who look for such analysis and therefore, don't subscribe to the S-R or, if they do so, do so for local information and look elsewhere for more complex understanding of the world.

Thanks for hearing out my comments.
